Carrier and York RTUs can successfully communicate with GridPoint over a single RS-485 (BACnet MS/TP) trunk.

Combined Setup

Core Configuration (GPEC / GEM)

  • Configure BACnet_2 port on GPEC Controller
  • Set Baud Rate to 19200 (use 38400 if 19200 does not work)
  • Set Address to 4
  • Configure York and Carrier RTUs
  • Set Address to 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (or any consecutive string that is open)
  • Set Communication Type to BACnet_2

RTU Configuration (Carrier + York)

  • Configure MAC Address to match GEM Address
  • Configure BACnet Device ID to match GEM Address
  • Configure Baud Rate to match GEM Baud Rate

Wiring Best Practices

  • Use daisy chain topology (we prefer no T-taps).
  • Maintain consistent polarity throughout the trunk.
  • Install 120-ohm termination resistors at both ends of the trunk.
  • Avoid duplicate MAC addresses or Device IDs.

Important Notes

  • Both York and Carrier devices can communicate over the same port (RS485 Terminal). Only one port can be configured for BACnet.
  • BACnet_2 / RS485 #2 is recommended due to GEM limitations with BACnet_3.
  • Both 19200 and 38400 baud rates have been successful. Ensure all devices match the configured rate.
  • Best performance is achieved with continuous addressing. Recommended: GPEC at 4, RTUs at 5–9.
  • MAC Address and BACnet Device ID must match each other and align with the GEM Address. This is required for proper communication with GPEC, even if it differs from manufacturer guidance.

If you are already set up on York or Carrier, you can skip to the relevant instructions below. After setting up the new units, follow the combined instructions above.

For example, if Carrier is already setup and communicating on site, and you are adding York units to the site, skip to the York instructions below. Once that is complete, follow the combined instructions above.

York RTU Setup

Required configuration steps for York RTUs to ensure proper BACnet MS/TP communication and control with EMS platforms (ex: GPEC / GEM).

BACnet Configuration Steps

  • Access the RTU controller via onboard display inside the unit
  • Navigate to: MENU - COMMUNICATIONS - BAS / PROTOCOL
  • Set Protocol to BACnet MS/TP
  • Set Baud Rate to 19200 (use 38400 only if required)
  • Assign unique MAC Address (recommended: 5–9 if controller is 4)
  • Set BACnet Device Instance (must be unique across network)
  • Save configuration and exit menu
  • Power cycle unit
  • Access onboard York controller again to verify settings were retained

MS/TP Wiring Requirements

  • Use daisy chain protocol
  • Maintain wiring polarity through whole trunk
  • Install 120-ohm termination resistor at first and last connections on the daisy chain
  • Ensure consistent baud rate across all devices (19200 or 38400)
  • Avoid duplicate MAC addresses or Device IDs

Integration Notes (GPEC / GEM)

  • Recommended addressing: GPEC = 4, RTUs = 5–9
  • Use BACnet_2 (RS485 Port #2)
  • Ensure MAC Address and Device ID match GEM configuration
  • Avoid BACnet_3 unless manually configured

Common Issue

  • Intermittent comms: verify baud rate, EOL resistors, and addressing

Carrier RTU Setup

Each Carrier RTU requires programming changes for proper BACnet control. A password is required in the System Vu configuration (located inside the unit) to make any configuration changes. The default password is 1111.

  • Select Menu
  • Navigate to SETTINGS ® NETWORK SETTINGS ® BAS PROTOCOL ® BACNET
  • Set NETWORK SETTINGS ® BACNET ® BACNET BAUDRATE to 19200
  • Set NETWORK SETTINGS ® BACNET ® MAC ADDRESS
  • Set NETWORK SETTINGS ® BACNET ® BACNET ID
  • Set NETWORK SETTINGS ® BACNET ® BACNET AUTO ID to No
  • Select BACK button to return to the main MENU screen
  • Turn power OFF to the unit (leave off for 30–60 seconds)
  • Turn power ON
  • Repeat steps to verify all settings were saved
  • Repeat steps on all remaining Carrier RTUs
  • Install a 120-ohm resistor at the first and last connections in the daisy chain
  • Use a quarter-watt (or larger) resistor for easier handling
